A patio is only as honest as the ground under it. On the Piedmont's red clay — which swells when it's wet and shrinks when it's dry — the base is what separates stonework that still sits flat in twenty years from stonework that heaves and parts in three.
We build the way the trade is meant to be practiced: excavate to depth, lay woven geotextile over the subgrade, then place and compact an aggregate base in four-inch lifts until it rings solid underfoot. Every surface is pitched two percent so water leaves the house instead of pooling, and every paver and stone is set by hand into a tight, swept joint. Our materials run to full-thickness natural stone and premium interlocking pavers — bluestone, travertine, granite, fieldstone — chosen for how they take a Carolina freeze-thaw, not how they photograph on a pallet.

Most premium paver patios across Charlotte and Lake Norman land between roughly $18 and $40 per square foot installed. For most luxury properties, yes. Interlocking pavers move with the freeze-thaw instead of cracking against it, any single unit can be lifted and reset if it ever needs it, and the range of color and texture is far wider. Poured concrete costs less at the outset but tends to crack and stain, and it cannot be repaired invisibly. Pavers hold their look and their value for decades.
It is the part you never see that decides everything you do see. On Charlotte's expansive red clay, a thin or skipped base is the single biggest cause of settling, heaving, and shifting pavers. We excavate to depth, compact an engineered aggregate base in lifts, and build in pitch and drainage so water moves away from the home and never stands beneath the surface.
A typical residential paver patio runs one to two weeks. Add walls, steps, a driveway, or an outdoor kitchen and it goes longer. Weather, site access, and material lead times all factor in, and your dedicated project lead sequences the work and keeps you current at every stage.
It depends on scope and jurisdiction. Retaining walls over a set height, driveways that change drainage or touch the right-of-way, and work on HOA properties often require permits or approvals in Charlotte, Huntersville, and the Lake Norman towns.
